The Wealth Gap Issue Of America - 1338 Words

The Wealth Gap Issue The wealth gap. It affects us all; old or young, male or female, and-- most importantly-- rich or poor. It’s what separates the most powerful and highest-paid people in America from the rest of us. It’s an issue that receives some attention, but perhaps not enough. The richest 1% of the U.S. owns more wealth than the bottom 90%, and that’s not the only reality of this issue. You see, this is a social and economic problem contributing to a plethora of other big problems here in the U.S., including child poverty, the dwindling middle-class, and the fact that the majority of American citizens have absolutely zero impact on public policy. Here’s the thing—the wealth gap is increasing, rapidly. Not much has been done to address this issue, and there’s a large group of people who don’t want anything done (guess who). I, among others, believe solving this issue opens the door to finding a solution to an abundance of other issues. Literature Review Three studies, published over the last several years, suggest that the majority of American’s have no idea how unequal the wealth gap actually is. The average American believes the richest fifth of the country own 59% of the wealth. The reality is that the richest fifth own about 84% of the nation’s wealth. This same idea also translates into an issue of income equality. CEOs for large corporations get paid about 12 times what the average American worker thinks they get paid. The average CEO-to-worker pay ratio isShow MoreRelatedThe Problem Of The Wage Gap944 Words   |  4 PagesThe wage gap is one of the most important issues that needs to be discussed and solved in contemporary society. Communicative Language Teaching This essay will take just a peek at some of the pedagogical aspects of Communicative Language Teaching and the teachers therein. As the U. This demand equally put educators, linguists and language experts under immense pressure to come up with something new and not as it were traditional methods or approaches e.g. audio linguistics which had been around since the end of the Second World War. Police Brutality Crime Or Collateral Damage - 1762 Words

Police Brutality: Crime or Collateral Damage? Imagine riding home after a fun night out with your friends, but never making it there. This is what happened to a young man named Oscar Grant who was fatally shot by the police for a crime he did not commit. Police brutality is the use of excessive force, physically or verbally, by a police officer. In one year, how many incidents of police brutality or misconduct do you think have occurred? In the U.S. alone, statistics show that over 2,500 incidents have been reported. Police work can undoubtedly be dangerous and police officers are trained and authorized to use force as part of their jobs. However, the misuse of such authority has resulted in damage to families and communities, the loss†¦show more content†¦Additionally, the suspect’s prior criminal record should not impact a jury’s decision to convict the accused police officer since â€Å"prior felony convictions of the plaintiff/victim of excessive force ar e neither relevant nor material to civil rights litigation† (243). I live in Oakland, a city with high crime rates and a reputation of being dangerous. With such high crime rates come large amounts of police action, and with this, a higher probability of police misconduct. Statistics indicate that in Oakland alone, more than a hundred federal and state cases of police brutality have been brought to court in the last decade. Tragically, several of these cases have been dismissed despite clear evidence against the offending police officer. The number of such cases in Oakland represents only a small fraction of the number of reported and unreported incidents of police brutality that occur nationwide. Police brutality is unjustifiable, and its consequences are detrimental to our society as a whole. Police misconduct has divided communities, destroyed the lives of its victims and their families, and at times has resulted in the killing of innocent people. Statistics show that there is a clear disparity between the police departments and the communities they serve. Many police departments are comprised mainly of Caucasian individuals while the majority of those affected by police brutality are part of a minority. In more than 2,000 incidents of

The Firmly Humanistic Orientation Of Confucianism

The firmly humanistic orientation of Confucianism has appealed to societies in the Far East for generations, due to its realistic world view and emphasis on culture and education, both intellectual and moral. Confucius focused his beliefs around the roles of Filial Piety, Rites, and Goodness in the life of a Gentleman. Unfortunately, Confucius is remembered for sayings that have been attributed to him, not for any writings that have been discovered. Although there are no survived writings by Confucius, there are many by Hsun Tzu that are still accessible. Though some views on human nature differ between the two philosophers, their values and ideas have helped create a generational way of life for many people. An essential theme in†¦show more content†¦In such a concentric culture, it is imperative to be kind to unlikeable people, but to mainly focus on the Good. Confucius said, â€Å"In the presence of a good man, think all the time how you may learn to equal him. In the presence of a bad man, turn your gaze within† (IV, 17). It is inevitable that humans who dislike each other will meet on occasion, yet a Confucian does not focus on his negative emotions towards the other person. A Gentleman â€Å"whose heart is in the smallest degree set upon Goodness will dislike no one† (IV, 3). This opposes the negative aspect of extreme individualism seen in the West, which is that everyone feels hostile towards each other. People in the Far East do not speak to each other in hateful ways, which is representative of their collective nature. Confucianism and collectivism overlap in many ways, which is why both aspects of society are important in the Far East. Confucius said, â€Å"The Gentleman by his culture collects friends about him, and through these friends promotes Goodness† (XII, 24). It is very Good socially and personally to not have an overly strong sense of self. For a Gentleman to be considered good, he must embody pos itive characteristics, be kind to others, and be humble in his own self-opinion. Rituals are also necessary in a Gentleman’s life, because â€Å"in the usages of ritual it is harmony that is prized†¦ If things go amiss, he who

In a more precise note, superannuation can be considered as the pension plan of the business organizations. The major advantage of superannuation funds is that the amount of money invested in the superannuation funds will grow automatically without the effect of any tax implications[1]. The money in the superannuation funds are provided to the employees of the organizations at the time of their maturity. Some of the major differences can be seen between the superannuation fund and the other pension funds. The tertiary sector staffs must take into consideration certain aspects at the time of taking the decision about the placement of the individual superannuation contribution in the specific plan of benefit as well as the choice plan of investment. In addition, several issues related with the time value of money need to be taken into consideration at the time of the investment decision-making process. The major objective of the superannuation is to encourage the people to save money and invest them in the upcoming years for their retirement. It can be seen that the Australian Government is very much proactive in the aspects of superannuation and the government is developing various regulations in the process of superannuation of the retired funds for by the employers of the organization for their employees. The decreased level of the employers that are contributing towards the superannuation was 3% on the salaries of the staffs and these aspects resulted in the increase in the minimum contribution by 9%. It has been deemed that the employees are interested to invest certain factor of their salaries in the superannuation funds[2]. The major objective of presenting the policy of superannuation fund is to decrease the burden of the security system of the society for the provision of pension payments. The superannuation is done in order help people after retiring. The superannuation law says that people increases the portion of saving out of the concern for their future lives after the retirement. For the increase in the awareness about savings, there are billion dollars of superannuation contribution in the recent scenario. This has been possible with of the financial institutions along with the superannuation funds. The role of these kinds of institutes is to invest the savings of the common people in the superannuation funds to get fair amount of profits and returns. In Australia, it can be seen that the superannuation funds along with the mutual funds are considered as the largest investors in the financial market that includes the equity securities of the business organizations in the local and international share market. One can take the name of UniSuper Limited, as they are the largest individual company in the superannuation industry that offers various services and offers regarding the superannuation funds within the tertiary education industry in Australia. This includes various universities, higher education institutes, various TAFE colleges and others. Several other superannuation investment funds are there that offers various provision of services in the current year. This whole process increases the portion of money invested in the superannuation funds and increases the choice of investment options to the investors. This process ensures flexibility in the process of investment in the superannuation funds and makes it sure that the assets are invested in the right position. In this regard, it is essential to mention that UniSuper Limited uses to provide two kinds of superannuation plans to its customers; they are explained benefit plan and investment choice plan. In case of the Explained Benefit Plan, the investors get the benefits of the plan after retirement. In this offer, some of the major formulas are employed like the final average salary of the employees along with the number of years of the particular investment plan. In a more precise note it can be said that in the process of Explained Benefit Plan, the employees retirement benefit is calculated as: Retirement Benefit = Benefit Salary Length of Membership Lump - Sum Factor Average Service Fraction For the employees in the tertiary education that are considering the idea of the adoption of Explained Benefit Plan, it is deemed that the trustees of UniSuper Limited determine the assets group in which the contributions of superannuation will be invested after the process of gathering them. In case of this type of investment, UniSuper Limited bears the risk of investment as the payout of benefit is calculated with the help of the above-mentioned formula and the performance of the investment in the asset portfolio is deemed to be irrelevant and this risk has no impact on the overall retirement policy. This process also indicates that the employees of the organizations may not be beneficial from certain amount of gains derived from the portfolio. It is the responsibility of the trustees of the company to attain the desertion in order to pay certain accumulated advantages on a yearly basis. However, this process a small fraction may arise in the total advantage of superannuation in th e selected plan. The employees who are interested in the Explained Benefit Plan have to maintain a specific investment account that encompasses personal and the employers contribution for superannuation along with yearly distribution of income[3]. In the process of superannuation fund, the investors must consider the aspect of time value of money. The reason is that a dollar in hand in the current situation is more vital than a dollar that is promised in the future. The dollar in hand in the current year can be used for the purpose of capital gain and to earn significant amount of interest. The presence of inflation decreases the value of dollar that is promised in the future than the dollar in hand currently. In addition, the time value of money is considered as one of the major concepts in superannuation as it helps to reveal the amount of future cash flow that arises due to the taking into consideration of the aspect of opportunity cost of the funds. This is the reason, the time value of money is considered as a vital concept in finance. The time value of money is considered as distinct at different points. Amount of money can be used for various productive purposes, but it can have distinct values at the time of gathering or paying. The value of money in the current year is considered as more valuable than its value in the upcoming years. The investors consider time value of money as an important aspect as the involvement of risk, uncertainty, consumption, inflation, opportunities of the investments and many others. The investors consider that the future is full of risk and the cash flow will remain in control as the individuals conduct the process of payment to the parties. Due to the reliance on the banks and the creditors, there is less uncertainty in the future cash flow. Individuals want to hold the money in present, as they are not certain about the future cash flow. In the process of Investment Selection Plan, employees have the opportunity to select the specific asset type of portfolio. In this case, the money is invested with the help of these following strategies: Stable Fund: The main components of this fund are the fixed rate of interest and the bond securities with a decrease in the exposure to the international and local shares and properties. Secure Fund: The main components are fixed-asset securities and Australian Cash. Share Fund: In this kind of funds, Investment depends on international and domestic shares. Trustee Selection Fund: This includes balance funds of international and local shares, properties along with investment in infrastructure and private equity. The basis of distinguishing of these above mentioned strategies are risk and return factor along with various secured funds that use to carry different inherent risks. After the period of retirement, UniSuper Limited offers various kinds of attractive investment plans. These plans include some major investment options along with pension plans. They are as below: Indexed Pension: This plan offers income on a regular basis and it is indexed with inflation. This plan is considered to be payable in the whole lifetime of the person. After the death of the person, this plan is transferred to his/her spouse. In some cases, the plan is relied on the death of the person. Individual Life Indexed Pension: The main advantage of this plan is that it provides regular income on an increased basis. This plan is compassioned to the standard of the above-discussed plan. In this plan, after the death of the person, the plan is not transferrable to his/her spouse. Allocated Pensions: This pension scheme offers regular income at a constant level. In this scheme, four types of investment strategies are there by which the money of the investors are invested. After the death of the investor, the pension amount is distributed among all the dependents of the person. Rollover Options: This pension fund offers individuals with the transfer of their investment money. In this scheme, the money of the investors are transferred to superannuation funds, personal approved funds, investment funds along with other approved deposit funds. At the time of the investment of this scheme, a retirement savings account is also created. Part-cash Distributions: This offer allows the investors to select their preferable percentage of the retirement fund that is subject to tax deduction. In addition, the investor also have the option to use the combination to address the investment issues. Risk and return profile are two of the most important aspects of this scheme[4]. The efficient market hypothesis can also be considered as the Random Walk Theory. This process considers the proportion of the hypothesis. It implies that the present stock price mainly focuses on the information about the value of the organization. It can be seen that there is not any other way to attain high value apart from this process. This process deals with the important and crucial issues of finance. It explains the reasons for the change in prices in the security market. It also explains the specific ways by which these particular changes take place. Hence, in order to take effective investment decisions, it is needed to employ various valuation and forecasting techniques. There are certain edges that the pension fund managers can turn into reasonable profits. The investors consider that the market is efficient and it is considered that the prices are extremely high or low. In this regard, it is considered that the hypothesis regarding the efficient market is true and the pension fund manager can choose an investment portfolio with a pin. In this aspect, the case is not considered that the chosen portfolio cannot be properly diversified due to the continuous increase in the correlate stocks. Due to this reason, exceptional risks can be seen in these kinds of funds and they may not be rewarded. In addition, it needs to be mentioned that the chosen portfolio is considered to have significant systematic risks for many people. in case the individuals have significant amount of assets that they can invest them into the risk free asserts, then this is not an severe issue. However, if the investors are not wealthy, then the portfolio may result in an increase in the beta in the risk preference of the individual. Abortion In Our Society Essay Example For Students

Abortion In Our Society Essay This is one of the highly debated topics, where a consensus is not likely to be met any time soon. If you want to find out more about this subject, there is more than just one free argumentative essay on abortion,  available online, as well as in written publications. It seems, though, that, no matter what titles  they carry, any abortion essay  tends to present a biased opinion towards one of the two sides: the ones pro-abortion, or the ones against it. We’ll try and be as objective as possible while presenting an overall view of abortion  as regarded today in societies around the world. Outline1 What does abortion  mean?2 The pro side3 The con side4 The middle ground5 Conclusion What does abortion  mean? We will write a custom essay on Abortion In Our Society specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now First, as an introduction, let’s try and give a short definition of what abortion  is: the spontaneous or induced termination of pregnancy. A few words about spontaneous abortion: it rarely is something that is desired to happen. It most often comes from some sort of health problem that the child  or the mother, has. Statistically, it happens more often to women  above 35 years of age, although, it is not that uncommon in the case of younger women, as well. For those who want to give birth to a child, it can be a very traumatic experience, greatly associated  with severe depression. Fortunately, there are doctors specialized in fertility issues, with great results in preventing this sort of abortion  to occur. The problematic and disputed part refers to the intentionally induced abortion,  and on this point, authors of various abortion essays  argue over the women’s  right to undergo such a procedure, as well as over the disadvantages of giving birth to an unwanted child versus the benefits of going through with the pregnancy. The pro side The representatives of this current are more focused on the right that women  have to freely choose what happens with their bodies. They tend to consider that the embryo is not a human  person as long as it is in the womb. It becomes a child  only after birth, and thus the abortion  cannot be considered a crime. It is more and more associated  with women  rights activists, given the fact that empowering women  is one of the main topics  in their every speech. They claim that imposing to have a child, could mean refusing their right to achieve a professional career and therefore a higher social and financial status. Pregnancy  and giving birth should be a benevolent choice and not become a source of extra stress. The main example to be given here is that of college students  that may face the choice of continuing their studies, or try and raise a child  while pursuing a career goal. Also, there is risk associated  with legally interdicting the procedure, while women are  going forward with their decision to terminate the pregnancy. This may lead to health, or even life hazards, if let’s say, the intervention is performed in an unsafe environment. The extreme way to go about favoring abortion  is the example of countries such as China, India, Russia, where this is used as a powerful means of birth control. The con side We do not include here only the religious fanatics that believe every life is God-given and no other has authority over it. Although the religious arguments have their place in the debate, we found that the majority of those that stand against abortion  are those who believe that every human  life is sacred. And the way they see it, human  life begins the moment of fertilization. This side of the debate also has a lot of arguments against abortion: the risk of something going wrong during the intervention, seeing as it is unnecessary and easily avoidable; the post-procedural physical complications that can appear; the psychological stress that women  often feel after ending the pregnancy. .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354 , .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354 .postImageUrl , .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354 , .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354:hover , .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354:visited , .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354:active { border:0!important; } .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354:active , .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354 .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u541d9e2cbbf903e4612192ef807a2354:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Genocide EssayThere are a few issues to address when talking about the psychological implications. Having an abortion  has often been associated  to behavioral abnormalities that vary from the lack of feeling pleasure in sexual relationships, developing a general discontent towards men, having couples issues, developing a lack of self-worth, which may lead to altering the lifestyle into promiscuity. Post-abortion  stress also causes  alterations of eating habits, severe depression, violent behavior that women  feel towards themselves as well as towards others, going as far as enabling child  abuse, or even suicidal tendencies. One of the advantages  offered by people who are so set out to keep women  from getting an abortion  is the lengths they will go to help to prevent and to deal with any unwanted pregnancy. There are specialized centers with professionals to aid with both prenatal and after birth care, counseling for post-birth depression and child  adoption services. The middle ground There are some countries where it is legal to have an abortion  up until 14 weeks into pregnancy, at their demand. When the pregnancy  goes into the second trimester, it is forbidden to perform the abortion, unless proven to be a risk factor for the mother’s health. Up until 14 weeks, the child  isn’t considered a functional human  being, but rather a conglomerate of living cells. After 14 weeks, it develops functional internal organs, nerves, and muscles. Cranium made of bones starts to evolve around his head and sex can be established. He also starts to develop what appears to be a conscience: the reflex to reach for the nipple to feed himself, the thumb sucking reflex, he begins frowning, looking sideways or grimacing. Some other countries with a more liberal view, outline  the legal setting in which an abortion  can be conducted, but give full freedom to the doctors, that can choose whether or not to perform the surgery and terminate the pregnancy.   It so happens, that some take action by the 14th  week rule as mentioned before. Others claim that it is against their personal beliefs, seeing as they made an oath to help preserve the human  lives and instead of ending a pregnancy, think it would be better to aid these women  during this whole period, as well as after the child  is born Conclusion A lot has and will continue to be said about this sensitive subject, and all sides have powerful arguments to sustain their position. The ones that are for it can base their claim on women’s rights, while the ones that are against it have the ethical and moral ground to support them. In between, are the ones that try and do good by both parts involved, protecting the mother as well as the unborn baby.
